It all begins with an idea.
TRoT was founded on the belief that stories shape the world.
At The Rule of Thirds, we transform ideas into compelling visual content. Building on years of experience in helping nonprofits, small businesses, and startups tell their stories, TRoT specializes in documentary-style filmmaking and strategic content creation. From our roots in Northern Virginia to serving clients nationwide, we're passionate about amplifying voices that make a difference.
Our mission is simple: create engaging video and photography that not only tells your story but drives real impact. We blend creativity, brand strategy, and deep client collaboration to deliver results that matter.
So, whether you're looking to spark a movement or simply share your passion, we're here to help bring your vision to life. Drop us a line - we'd love to grab a coffee (virtual or otherwise), meet your team, and start exploring how we can turn your ideas into unforgettable content.
The Rule of Thirds: A principle in design and photography that creates balance and focus by dividing a frame into nine equal parts.

Core Values
SHOW, DON’T TELL
Words are great. We love words. But there is something really special about watching someone tell their story that forges emotional connections. These moments can speak volumes about who you are as a company and what your brand stands for. It isn’t just effective - it’s essential for standing out and making a lasting impression. We are good at turning audiences into advocates.
WHAT IF? > WHAT IS
Our creativity isn't just about making things look pretty (though we do that too). It's about taking your wildest ideas and bringing them kicking and screaming into reality. We thrive on challenges that make others scratch their heads. "Can we film underwater while juggling flaming chainsaws?" Probably not, but we'll find a way to capture that essence without the ER visit. When you work with us, expect the unexpected, embrace the unconventional, and watch as we transform your "What if?" moments into "Okay, I dig this.”
WALK THE WALK
Integrity is the foundation of our work. Asking people to open up to not only us and our cameras, but to a whole slew of strangers who will be hitting that play button, is a tough ask and one we don’t take lightly. We build trust by being consistent, transparent, and communicative with those we photograph and those with whom we collaborate. As a client, you can be damn sure that our actions will always align with our words.
CURIOSITY IS EVERYTHING
Even though we're not nosy (okay, maybe a little), our insatiable curiosity drives us to ask questions. Lots of them. We don't just scratch the surface; we dig deep and really sniff out the things that make your brand unique. Our curiosity drives us to explore uncharted territories, challenge assumptions, and connect dots you didn't even know existed. This isn't just about making gorgeous films – it's about following that north star to the heart of your story.
EMPATHY IN MOTION
Not gonna lie. We’ve done a number of interviews where tears were flowing on both sides of the camera. Stories can do that to a group of people. What we know is that empathy sharpens our lens. We listen with open ears to understand our clients’ needs and vision. This deep understanding guides every shot and every interaction, capturing what truly matters. I’m not crying, you’re crying!
STEADILY WE TRoT
We're not just a one-trick pony in this rodeo (and yes, this isn’t our first). Like our namesake, The Rule of Thirds, we believe in balance - steady progress paired with lightning-fast execution. We don't believe in "hurry up and wait" or "slow and steady wins the race." Nope, we're all about "consistently kick-ass and surprisingly speedy." With us, you get the best of both worlds. They say that a horse’s trot is about 8-12 mph. We’re cool with that.
